What Are Full Dentures?

Full dentures are designed to restore a complete set of teeth on either your upper or lower jaw or even both. Crafted from a strong acrylic base that fits snugly against your gums, they house a full arch of artificial teeth made from durable resin. These teeth are matched to the size, shape, and colour of your natural teeth (or your desired appearance) to achieve a natural-looking smile. Unlike dental implants, full dentures are removable, allowing for convenient cleaning and maintenance throughout the day.

While traditional dentures offer a dependable solution for tooth loss, some individuals may experience occasional slipping or discomfort, particularly with lower dentures. We can explore additional options to enhance stability and confidence. This might include denture implants, strategically placed dental implants that act as anchors to secure the dentures in place.

How Do Full Dentures Work?

Full dentures achieve a secure and comfortable fit through a combination of innovative design and natural processes. The custom-crafted acrylic base is moulded to the exact contours of your gums. This close adaptation creates a natural suction effect that helps the dentures stay firmly in place during speaking and eating. Additionally, the strategically positioned artificial teeth play a crucial role. They are designed to interlock precisely, mimicking the natural biting force distribution of your original teeth. This not only enhances stability but also allows for comfortable chewing.

For some individuals, particularly those with lower jaw dentures, a specialised denture adhesive may be recommended to provide additional confidence and security. This adhesive creates a stronger bond between the dentures and your gums, offering peace of mind during daily activities.

Totally recommend Dorking Dental Practice in Dene Street. I chipped a tooth and was in a lot of pain as it was sharp. I couldn't get an appointment with my own practice and a colleague recommended DDC so I walked in praying they had space but not too hopeful. Another patient was running late so Dr Iqbal treated me in her lunch hour. Staff couldn't have been nicer and the temporary fix is seriously good and very smooth. Considering moving across to here. Thank you Dr Iqbal and Mark on Reception who was super lovely in getting me seen.

The team at Dorking dental are absolutely fantastic! Mark is great and will always keep you updated with your booking and advise when other slots become available. Dr Samera Iqbal is the best dentist I have ever come across. As a nervous patient, she will always take time to explain what the procedure is, and what the best solution is. Most importantly she will make sure you are completely comfortable before and throughout the procedure, I wouldn't use anyone else!

Frequently Asked Questions

Full dentures are a good option for individuals who have lost all their teeth in one or both jaws. However, during a consultation, our dentist will assess your individual situation and discuss alternative solutions like dental implants if they are a better fit.
Modern full dentures are designed to look and feel natural. The custom-made base and teeth will be crafted to closely resemble your original smile. With proper care and adjustment, speaking and eating with dentures should feel comfortable and natural over time.
While you can wear your dentures throughout the day, it’s recommended to remove them at night to allow your gums to rest. Soaking them overnight helps prevent them from drying out and losing their shape.
If your dentures break or become loose, don’t try to fix them yourself. Contact us to schedule an appointment for proper repair or adjustments.
With proper care, full dentures can last for several years. However, over time, the fit may change due to bone resorption. Regular checkups and relining procedures might be necessary to maintain a comfortable and secure fit.
