Partial Dentures

Missing teeth can impact more than just your smile. Eating, speaking, and even your facial structure can be affected. We understand the importance of a complete smile, which is why we offer partial dentures as a natural-looking and comfortable solution.

What Are Partial Dentures?

Partial dentures are removable and are custom-designed to fill in the gaps left by missing teeth. Unlike full dentures which replace all teeth in an arch, partials are strategically crafted to integrate seamlessly with your remaining natural teeth. They typically consist of a gum-coloured acrylic base that rests comfortably on your gums, with replacement teeth attached. These replacement teeth are made from high-quality materials that mimic the appearance and function of your natural teeth. Depending on your specific needs, the partial denture may be secured by metal clasps that latch onto healthy teeth or by precision attachments that provide a more discreet and comfortable fit.

When Do I Need Partial Dentures?

Several factors can indicate that partial dentures are the right solution for you. Missing teeth can cause a domino effect, leading to difficulty chewing, speech impediments, and even jawbone deterioration. Partials are ideal if you have several missing teeth scattered throughout your mouth, particularly if they’re located next to each other. This creates gaps that can hinder your ability to chew effectively. Additionally, missing front teeth can significantly impact your speech and confidence. Partials restore the natural form and function of your teeth, allowing you to eat, speak, and smile with ease. Consulting our dentist is the best way to determine if partial dentures are the right choice for addressing your specific needs and restoring your complete smile.

How Do Partial Dentures Stay in Place?

Unlike complete dentures that rely on suction for stability, partial dentures utilise a combination of design elements to ensure a secure and comfortable fit. The most common method involves clasps made from a thin, flexible metal. These clasps gently wrap around healthy teeth adjacent to the gap, anchoring the partial denture in place. Modern clasps are designed to be discreet and comfortable, minimising any visual impact on your smile.

For a more aesthetically pleasing option, precision attachments can be used. These attachments involve small crowns or brackets cemented onto your natural teeth, which then connect to strategically placed components on the partial denture. This creates a highly secure and virtually invisible hold, enhancing both the functionality and natural appearance of your smile.

Benefits of Partial Dentures

Partial dentures offer a multitude of advantages over leaving missing teeth unaddressed.:
Enhanced Functionality: Partial dentures restore your ability to chew effectively, allowing you to enjoy a wider variety of foods and promoting proper digestion. They also improve speech clarity by filling gaps that can affect pronunciation.

  • Improved Confidence: A complete smile is essential for self-esteem. Partial dentures restore the natural appearance of your teeth, allowing you to smile confidently without feeling self-conscious about missing teeth.
  • Preserves Jawbone Health: Missing teeth can lead to jawbone deterioration over time. Partial dentures prevent this by stimulating the jawbone and maintaining its natural structure.
  • Supports Remaining Teeth: Gaps left by missing teeth can cause remaining teeth to shift out of place. Partials prevent this shifting, maintaining proper dental alignment.
  • Cost-Effective: Compared to dental implants, partial dentures offer a more affordable solution for replacing missing teeth.
  • Comfortable and Convenient: Modern partial dentures are lightweight and custom-designed for a comfortable fit. They are also removable for easy cleaning and maintenance.

Totally recommend Dorking Dental Practice in Dene Street. I chipped a tooth and was in a lot of pain as it was sharp. I couldn't get an appointment with my own practice and a colleague recommended DDC so I walked in praying they had space but not too hopeful. Another patient was running late so Dr Iqbal treated me in her lunch hour. Staff couldn't have been nicer and the temporary fix is seriously good and very smooth. Considering moving across to here. Thank you Dr Iqbal and Mark on Reception who was super lovely in getting me seen.

The team at Dorking dental are absolutely fantastic! Mark is great and will always keep you updated with your booking and advise when other slots become available. Dr Samera Iqbal is the best dentist I have ever come across. As a nervous patient, she will always take time to explain what the procedure is, and what the best solution is. Most importantly she will make sure you are completely comfortable before and throughout the procedure, I wouldn't use anyone else!

Frequently Asked Questions

While well-maintained partial dentures can last for several years (5-10), their lifespan depends on various factors like daily wear and tear, oral hygiene practices, and the quality of the materials. Regular dental check-ups and proper care are crucial to maximise their longevity.

Partial dentures themselves shouldn’t significantly impact your taste. However, the act of covering some palate area with the denture base might slightly alter your initial perception of flavours. This is usually temporary, and your taste buds will adjust over time.
Yes, proper cleaning is essential for maintaining oral hygiene and preventing denture damage. Brush your dentures daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a non-abrasive denture cleanser. Soak them overnight in a denture cleaning solution as recommended by your dentist.
While it’s not necessarily harmful, most dentists recommend removing your partial dentures while sleeping for optimal comfort and oral health. This allows your gums to rest and reduces the risk of irritation or infection.

Dental implants offer a permanent solution for replacing missing teeth. However, they require a surgical procedure and are more expensive. Dental bridges can also be an option, but they involve attaching replacement teeth to healthy teeth on either side of the gap, requiring them to be ground down slightly.
