What is Teeth Whitening?

Teeth whitening is a cosmetic dental procedure aimed at lightening the natural colour of your teeth without removing any of the tooth surfaces. It can significantly enhance the brightness of your smile, contributing to an improved appearance and self-confidence. The process targets stains and discolouration caused by various factors, including diet (consumption of tea, coffee, red wine, and certain foods), smoking, and the natural ageing process, which can lead to teeth becoming darker or yellowed over time. While teeth whitening is highly effective for most people, it’s essential to consult with a dental professional to ensure the procedure is suitable for your dental health.

Benefits of Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening offers several benefits, primarily enhancing one’s smile and overall appearance. It can boost self-confidence, making individuals feel more confident in social and professional settings.

Types of Teeth Whitening

At Dorking Dental Centre, we offer a variety of teeth whitening options to cater to individual preferences and dental health needs. While over-the-counter products like whitening strips and toothpastes are accessible, they typically offer less impressive results. We prioritise your dental health and aesthetic goals, ensuring the whitening process is both effective and safe.

In-chair Whitening

In-chair whitening is a professional dental procedure performed by our teeth whitening experts at our Dorking dental practice. It involves the application of a high-concentration bleaching gel to the teeth, which is then activated by a special light. This method provides rapid same-day results, often achieving several shades of whitening in a single session, making it an excellent choice for those seeking immediate improvements in the appearance of their teeth.

  • High-concentration bleaching gel is applied to the teeth.
  • A special light is used to activate the gel.
  • Rapid same-day teeth whitening results, often achieving several shades of whitening in one session.
  • Ideal for those seeking immediate improvements.

At-Home Whitening Kits

At-home whitening kits provided by our dental professionals offer a more flexible approach to teeth whitening. These kits include custom-fitted trays made from impressions of the patient’s teeth and professional-grade whitening gel. Patients wear these trays for a specified period, usually a few hours a day or overnight, for a period of several days to weeks. While the results are not as immediate as in-office treatments, they are effective, and patients have greater control over the whitening process, making it suitable for those who prefer a gradual approach or have sensitive teeth.

Teeth Whitening for Sensitive Teeth

Teeth whitening for sensitive teeth requires a careful and tailored approach to minimise discomfort and protect dental health. At Dorking Dental Centre, we understand the importance of providing options that cater to patients with sensitivity. Our treatments are designed to reduce the risk of irritation, using specially formulated whitening agents that are gentle on the enamel yet effective in achieving a brighter smile. We also offer advice on aftercare and products to help manage sensitivity post-whitening. Our dental professionals closely assess each patient’s dental history and sensitivity levels to recommend the most suitable whitening method, ensuring a comfortable experience and satisfying results.

How Teeth Whitening Works

At Dorking Dental Centre, we utilise advanced whitening techniques that safely penetrate the tooth enamel to break down stains caused by food, drink, smoking, and ageing. The process involves applying a bleaching agent, typically hydrogen peroxide or carbide peroxide, which reacts with the discolouration compounds in the teeth, effectively lightening the overall shade of the teeth without damaging the tooth structure. Our experienced dental professionals carefully control the concentration and application of the whitening agent, ensuring a balanced and effective treatment tailored to individual needs and desired outcomes.

How Effective Are Teeth Whitening Strips?

The effectiveness of teeth whitening strips is a common query among patients seeking a brighter smile. While whitening strips can be a convenient and cost-effective option, their results are less effective than treatments provided by us. These over-the-counter products contain a lower concentration of bleaching agents compared to professional treatments, making them suitable for mild discolouration but less effective for deeper stains or uniform whitening.

Aftercare

Aftercare is crucial in extending the longevity of teeth whitening results and maintaining dental health. At Dorking Dental Centre, we emphasise the importance of a thorough aftercare routine post-whitening treatment. This includes avoiding foods and beverages that can stain teeth, such as coffee, tea, red wine, and certain fruits, for at least 48 hours. Additionally, maintaining good oral hygiene practices, such as regular brushing and flossing, helps prevent new stains from forming. We also recommend periodic touch-up treatments and the use of whitening toothpaste approved by dental professionals to keep your smile bright. Our team provides personalised aftercare advice to ensure your teeth remain radiant and healthy.

Dorking Dental Centre are very welcome and professional. Appreciated the time they took to review my teeth for Invisalign, one comment/improvement would be; they asked me to come back in to the practice to inform me I was not compatible for these type of braces and was there or 5 mins, would have been better/easier to simply tell me over the phone so I didn't have to drive all the way down there.
